Garbage Dressage

I wanted to submit some online dressage tests, but I was in need of some new markers. I’m guessing a lot of people are having similar thoughts because the cheap sets of cones are sold out everywhere (at least in Canada).

My next step was to just look for white cones. Nope, sold out too. White buckets? Maybe my google skills stink, but those white home improvement useful buckets are a pricey $15 each right now. Plus the metal handle needs to be removed.  Plain old traffic cones? Same story. I stopped in at our neighborhood recycling guy, but he didn’t have any old cones or buckets I could repurpose either.

Then, as I was picking out things for my new office space, I stumbled on these $2 IKEA garbage cans. They’re plastic, they’re stackable, and I think they’re going to work.

If you’re looking for me, I’ll just be over here on my feral baby pony doing some walk/trot tests, and hopefully staying between the garbage bins šŸ˜

  1. That is a great idea! How heavy are they? Are you worried about them potentially blowing away?

I have been wanting to pick up the plastic potties from Ikea to use as raised cavaletti. Sadly my nearest Ikea is in a Covid-19 hot spot. I am content to wait for now.

  2. They’re sturdy enough but really not very heavy. I think they’ll be adequate if I bury them a little in the footing if it’s windy. I share a club arena, so they’re just going to be out while I ride. I needed something easy to pack away and I think these will do the trick. Being PVC type plastic I don’t think they’d hold up forever left out in the weather, but who knows? Agree with in person IKEA being scary right now - I got them online!

  3. I have garbage can letters too šŸ¤£šŸ¤£ I reversed the letters on the opposite side so that if necessary that can sit open end up and I can drop some rocks in them for weight! šŸ˜

    1. Oh, smart! I'm going to do that. I was half thinking about being cute and putting some fake flowers in them too :)

  5. I had old coffee syrup buckets at my old barn as letters in the outdoor, they came with lids so we filled them with sand. Someone had donated them to us when they heard we needed buckets and they worked pretty well. Definitely a much pretty version then our coffee syrup buckets.

    1. That sounds really similar to what I had before! They lasted forever and were great. Half of them have disappeared now or been repurposed without anyone replacing them (why do I hold grudges over such silly things?) For whatever reason apparently there's now a bucket shortage locally so I opted to just replace the whole 'set'.

  6. GReat idea. I think they’d blow away here. But putting a weight on top should work.
