Working hard holding her own grooming supplies |
As a quick recap of the past few days, we had our lesson Wednesday and she seemed a little off, running out of steam about half an hour in. So, I gave her Thursday and Friday off just to play it safe. On Saturday, she seemed quite bright and eager to do something, but coughed lightly a couple of times as I warmed up. So, we did a mostly walking ride and focused on lateral work and correct bend. I then added in a ton of free walk/medium walk/collected walk transitions. Super exciting stuff that I am normally guilty of ignoring a little too much because her walk is her best gait and I seem to be drawn to a project, ie fussing with the trot and canter :) .
Sunday when I drove in, Midge was running around being silly, which was nice to see. She was waiting for me at the gate when I got there, another sure sign she was bored with energy to burn. After a slow warmup and a teeny bit of dressage I let her gallop around the arena twice and jump three or four teeny jumps. She quite liked that, but it's been quite hot out and I wanted to go easy so we ditched the saddle and went off for a 20 min walk hack around the neighbourhood. I love that she's sensible enough to do some dressage, gallop around and jump a little, and go out for a bareback hack on the road all in the same 45 min ride.
Meandering around on a nice summer day |
Fingers crossed she's over the worst of the bug and we can resume our regularly scheduled activities this week. We have a lesson tonight and we'll see if she's feeling well enough to plan for our clinic Wednesday. Our countdown clock to optimum fitness for Rebecca Farm 2017 is ticking and we will need every minute of it ;)
Hope the cold bug moves out of the barn soon! I want to come watch at Rebecca in 2017 - you two will be awesome :D
ReplyDeleteShe was almost 100% last night, so happy! Yes, we need to have a Rebecca farm blogger meet up! Ohhhh...AND you should come to the johvale clinic next spring...so much fun, not intimidating at all and I bet we'd be in the same lesson group :)
DeleteThat sounds like a really fun ride! I'm hoping to be able to do more trail riding soon but for now I'll be jealous. Hopefully Bridget will be feeling completely better soon.
ReplyDeleteOur trail access here is not so great compared to what I'm used to, but I do love the option of hacking around on a loose rein and exploring, I think it's good mentally for the both of us.
DeleteThis could be totally unrelated, but Connor and his full brother both get a cough and runny nose (and slobbers) when the alsyke clover comes in in July. I had completely forgotten and was getting really worried when Connor was coughing a lot lately, then I realized he hasnt been on pasture in July in 3 years, long enough for me to forget. I wrote about it a long time ago. He does a couple of coughs at the beginning of a ride and then every so often throughout the day. Maybe it's a genetic Welsh Cob thing...? Goes away sometime in August.
ReplyDeleteOh, interesting. We don't have clover in the field (or actually much pasture at all right now) but maybe we do in the hay (it's from Oregon). The COPD with Bridget is definitely an allergy thing and the vet previously mentioned the most likely cause of flare ups given our environment would be something showing up in the odd bale of hay. Makes me wish we had access to a single hay field/supplier! Weird as it sounds, I'm crossing fingers her cough is just a cold this time :)
Deleteaw what a good mare. gotta love that versatility and sensibility! hopefully she's back to feeling fully 100% soon too!
ReplyDeleteThank you! I'm biased but I think she's wonderful :)
DeleteI've got my fingers crossed that she's feeling better sooner than later
ReplyDeleteThank you, I think your finger crossing is working :)
DeleteHope that she is feeling better soon - you're a great horsey mama.
